FAQ

Questions asked before a first nuru booking

I have read about nuru and it is the technique I want — how is it actually different from an oil massage, or from body-to-body?

Oil is absorbed and it drags a little, which is what lets a therapist hold pressure in one place; nuru gel does the opposite, and once it is spread there is almost no friction left to work against. Body-to-body uses warm oil and the therapist's weight, so it is the same idea in a plainer form — hands, forearms, torso, nothing to set up and nothing to rinse away. Nuru adds the gel and a waterproof sheet, and what that buys is continuity: the stroke never has to break, because nothing catches. If you have read about the technique and want that specific quality, it is not a variation on the oil work, it is a different thing.

What is the gel made of, and is it going to mark the sheets?

It is drawn from seaweed, clear, odourless and heavier than oil, and it is water-soluble. It does not stain, and in any case it is used over a waterproof sheet the therapist brings with her and takes away again, so it is never in contact with the hotel's linen. This is the question most people ask first, and it is a reasonable one — the answer is that the room is left as it was found.

Does this need a mat, or does it work on a hotel bed?

It works on a bed, and most of ours are done on one. The waterproof sheet goes down first and the bed takes the rest; a mat is the bathhouse arrangement and it is not what a hotel room is set up for. If the room happens to have the floor space the therapist may prefer to use it, and she will say so, but nothing about the booking depends on it.

Is there anything I should do to the room before she arrives?

Turn the heating up, and that is the whole of it. Temperature is the one variable the technique is sensitive to — a warm room is the difference between an hour that works and an hour that does not, and a hotel room takes a while to come up. Everything else arrives with her: the gel, the waterproof sheet, warm oils, fresh towels. There is no studio and no incall address to come to instead, so the room is the room, and it needs nothing beyond being warm.

What happens to the towels and the sheet afterwards?

The waterproof sheet is hers and it leaves with her. The towels are her own as well, brought fresh and taken away used, which is part of why the bag is the size it is. Nothing belonging to the hotel is used and nothing of it needs replacing, and you are not left with anything to explain to housekeeping in the morning.

Is a shower part of it, or is that left to me afterwards?

It is part of it. The gel is water-soluble and comes away clean under running water, and the session is built to finish there rather than to stop and then be tidied up. It is the end of the hour rather than an appendix to it.

How much of the booked time goes on setting up and clearing away?

A few minutes at either end. She warms the gel and lays the sheet while the room is coming up to temperature, which is the same few minutes any therapist spends warming oil and putting out towels, and the clearing is a matter of rolling one sheet and gathering towels. The hour you book is not eaten by the apparatus; it is a fear people arrive with and it does not survive the first booking.

Is an hour long enough for nuru, or is it a technique that wants more?

An hour shows you what the gel does, and for a first time that is the right length. Ninety minutes and two hours are what people come back for, because the work depends on continuity and continuity rewards length. Nuru is also one of the few techniques we will carry through to a full overnight. The rates are €180 for an hour, €270 for ninety minutes, €360 for two hours, €540 for three, and €1,250 for eight hours overnight, with nothing added for the hour of the night, for a weekend, or for travel inside the ring. We do not publish a menu of what an hour holds; the hour is yours to spend.

I am in a hotel in the centre tonight — what do I send, and how long from message to therapist at the door?

Send the hotel or the district, the hour you want, the length, and that it is nuru you are asking for, using the WhatsApp button on this page; Telegram works the same way. A name and an arrival window come back inside about ten minutes. From there she is twenty to thirty minutes away anywhere in the centre, and that figure holds across the districts rather than varying by address, because forty-five therapists are spread over the city rather than dispatched from one building. Schiphol airport hotels are arranged on enquiry rather than on that timing. There is no number to call and nothing to fill in beyond the message you send.

When does the money change hands, and in what form?

On arrival, and not before. Cash in any major currency, card, or crypto, whichever suits you. There is no deposit, no booking fee and no payment page, and nothing about the arrangement asks you to commit money to a message thread.
